THE GARDEN OF ROBOTIC UNKRAUT charts the continuing adventures of Chris Janka and his collaborators. A musically and visually complex film, it documents Janka’s work designing, constructing, and orchestrating a series of robotic instruments, which are composed of motors, relays, electromagnets, and pneumatic components. THE GARDEN OF THE ROBOTIC UNKRAUT observes a recording session at the renowned ORF radio studios, in which Janka and his fellow Blueblut band members Pamelia Stickney and Mark Holub attempt to improvise alongside this mechanical, MIDI orchestra.
“Andenborstengürteltier,” the first track of the album of the same name by the Viennese under- ground combo Blueblut lasts just 41 seconds. To the minimalist composition with just as mini- mal vocals, in a rapid montage, Angela Christlieb conveys an alienated picture of the title animal, a type of armadillo. A musical as well as visual tongue twister as artistic articulation exercise.

A dreamlike journey through shifting layers of consciousness. A man living in cold, sparsely furnished opulence is visited by images of a woman who may or may not be his lover. She appears both tactile and ghost-like, transparent and reflected, observed or remembered. He appears to photograph her, they appear to make love. The woman takes the form of a hallucinogenic surface for his paranoia and isolation. She moves like a sleepwalker through a world between sound and silence, desire and loss.

„IN AN ALIEN LAND” is a lyrical visual analogy, a poetic journey of a mysterious woman crossing seas. Abstract sequences are woven together revealing two parallel stories through a diptych. The split screen reveals two distinct places displayed side by side: a tropical serene landscape and an American metropolis which is eventually filled with political tension. With each segment of the film, we are shown different perspectives of place and time. Associations arise and dissipate over again.
The film is a collaboration between filmmaker and artist Angela Christlieb based in Vienna and the New York artist, filmmaker, cinematographer Maria Niro.

Alien-artig graben sich Urzeitkrebse in die Erde ein. Durch ihre ruckartigen Bewegungen ver- schiebt sich das Bild, unterstützt durch Störsignale des minimalistischem Scores. Farben wechseln komplementär, ein Relief-Effekt entsteht. Durch Umkehrung der Bildebenen entsteht ein unterirdischer Raum, der sich immer mehr verdichtet.

Somewhere in Europe an „unknown event“ causes a temporary gap in people´s memories. People are loosing their sense of time while watching the spectacle. At the same time in New York a woman has a déjà-vu, memory fragment of people looking at the sky. While realizing time is going backwards, she tries to find a way out of the time zone where she is captured.
